Today I caught up with a friend of mine who studies anthropology in the New School. She shared an article about how an adjunct lecturer of humanities with doctorate degree relied on sex work to support herself. The article was full of depressing statistics of how little money PhD students make after they graduate, and alternative side jobs they have to do to make ends meet. These statistics was making my friend pretty nervous, as she just started her Masters program. I did tell her that she will be okay, that she won't fall into the statistics described in this article. But this incident made me realize how numbers can make you feel really frustrated when it describes a bad news.
