Mathematics for VR Audio Design (NYC Media Lab Summit 2017)

This workshop covers essential mathematical knowledge regarding audio design for VR application. It will discuss quaternion algebra and mathematical modeling for the acoustics. Quaternion algebra is a mathematical concept that is common in VR development, and this workshop will teach the concept of quaternion and its practical application in VR coding for vector rotation. Ideas and methodology for mathematical model that creates three-dimensional auditory scene will be discussed, along with practical implementation using HRIR-convolved audio files. The workshop will be demonstrated using music software MAX/MSP and python, although methods discussed can be more generally applied to other platforms. This workshop is in partnership with NYC Media Lab.
